James Stewart - St. Louis Race Report

Round number nine of the 2013 AMA Supercross Series rolled through Edward Jones Dome in St. Louis on Saturday night, and James was eager to hit the track fresh off of his huge win last weekend in Atlanta. Feeling quick and confident during the St. Louis practice sessions earlier in the day, JS7 had hopes of capturing back-to-back main event wins with a victory in the STL, but unfortunately came up one position short in what proved to be among the most competitive main events of the series thus far.

James kicked of his St. Louis campaign by setting the quickest lap time during the day’s timed practice sessions, and then proceeded to collect yet another heat race win, this time in front of championship points leader Davi Millsaps (2nd) and Red Bull KTM’s Ryan Dungey (3rd).

After jumping out to a top-five start in the 450SX main event, JS7 wasted little time as he worked his way by Justin Barcia and Mike Alessi to take over the lead on lap two. James held down the top spot for the next nine laps, but a hard-charging Ryan Villopoto got by on lap 11 to move his way into the lead. Stewart immediately retaliated to reclaim the lead, but RV got back by moments later during a confusing and somewhat controversial red cross flag situation due to a downed rider. James kept RV honest for the remaining laps, but was unable to pose another serious challenge for the win.

“That was a pretty crazy main,” James said after a long meeting with the AMA regarding the controversial pass. “It got a little confusing there with the red cross flags out, but regardless, Ryan [Villopoto] rode a great race. Hats off to him.”
