MX GP of The Netherlands 2013 - Qualifying Races

VALKENSWAARD (The Netherlands), 31 March 2013 – The Grand Prix of The Netherlands started today in Valkenswaard under very cold conditions but it did not stop the riders to go out for the qualifying races and offer great racing. Antonio Cairoli and Glenn Coldenhoff dominated the MX1 and MX2 qualifying heats respectively, while Chiara Fontanesi won race one of the first round of the FIM Women Motocross World Championship, ahead of Meghan Rutledge and Natalie Kane.

The MX3 riders took part in the qualifying practice sessions and Filip Neugebauer and Gert Krestinov were the fastest of their group. Matthias Walkner, 2012 FIM MX3 World Champion, was twelfth but he is confident that tomorrow he can make a good result.

MX1
Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Antonio Cairoli obtained his third pole position in a row after winning the qualifying heat today in Valkenswaard. The Italian took the holeshot and led the first corners, but Ken De Dycker was coming really fast from behind and the Belgian finally overtook his teammate. However, Cairoli did not give up and he passed back De Dycker by the middle of the heat and the Italian managed to open a gap and he dominated the race until the chequered flag. De Dycker started the day being the fastest in the pre-qualifying session and he succeeded in leading a few laps of the qualifying heat, so tomorrow he will be definitely fighting for the overall victory.

Rockstar Energy Suzuki World’s Clement Desalle started third, closely followed by Kawasaki Racing Team’s Gautier Paulin, but the Belgian managed to keep the position until the finish line, and the French rider ended fourth. Honda World Motocross’ Evgeny Bobryshev, who had obtained the best third lap time result in the pre-qualifying session, rode also a consistent heat behind Desalle and Paulin and finished fifth.

Jeremy Van Horebeek proved today that he is almost fully recovered from his finger injury by finishing sixth in the qualifying race and being able to keep the rhythm of the front group riders. The Belgian rider still does not have all the mobility in his finger, but he hopes that he can have a good result tomorrow at the main races.

Joel Roelants and Kevin Strijbos had an intense battle during the whole heat and when there were two laps to go they were racing really close. In the end, Roelants managed to keep his initial seventh position and Strijbos ended eighth. David Philippaerts was ninth and Tanel Leok completed the top ten.

Tommy Searle crashed in the beginning of the heat and had to push from the back of the pack to finish fourteenth, ahead of Steven Frossard, who also crashed during the qualifying race. In fact, the French rider was riding with a fracture in one of his left toe – injury he suffered while training earlier in the week – and at the end of the race he was taken to the hospital, as it seems that the fractured bone has been more damaged after today’s crash.

Max Nagl was another rider who crashed during the opening lap of the qualifying heat and he could only finish sixteenth.

MX2
Standing Construct KTM’s Glenn Coldenhoff took the holeshot of the qualifying race and he managed to keep the lead until the chequered flag. The Dutch rider was extremely happy with his riding today and he is looking forward to tomorrow’s races to see if he can also be fighting for a podium finish in front of his home crowd.

Wilvo Nestaan JM Racing KTM’s Romain Febvre had also an excellent start and he rode second from the beginning until the end. The French rider felt really comfortable in the Dutch track and he pushed Coldenhoff as much as he could, but by the end of the heat Febvre decided to ride safe in second and keep some energies for tomorrow’s races.

The third place was for his teammate Jake Nicholls who rode a consistent race in third and he finished just one second behind Febvre. The British rider has a really good gate pick for tomorrow’s races, so he might be able to obtain his maiden podium result and improve his current thirteenth position in the MX2 point standings.

Rockstar Energy Suzuki Europe’s Max Anstie started fifth, but in the first laps he managed to overtake José Butrón and the British rider managed to keep comfortably the fourth position until the end of the race. Fifth was Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Jordi Tixier who showed a really good rhythm today, as he managed to recuperate several positions after not making a really good start.

Petar Petrov did also really well during the qualifying race, as he started down in ninth and succeeded in finishing sixth, ahead of José Butrón and Christophe Charlier. Julian Lieber was ninth and Maxime Desprey completed the top ten.

Jeffrey Herlings did not have a good jump at the start and when he reached the first corner he was around the 20th position. The Dutch rider gave his best to move up some places, but when he was seventh, he had a big crashed. Fortunately, he did not get injured, but Herlings was disqualified for accepting outside assistance and tomorrow he will start from the outside part of the gate.

At the start of the race, Dylan Ferrandis and Alessandro Lupino were involved in a tangle and it took them some time to restart the bikes again. In the end, they were both back in the race and they finished 24th and 26th respectively.

Dean Ferris took part in the qualifying heat, but after a couple of laps he decided to enter the pitlane and he did not finish the race.
